Readers' Workshop Update

This class loves to read!!!  We were able to get our Readers' Workshop up and running quickly this year because they are familiar with the routines and expectations from following the workshop model in first grade.  This week we focused on strategies to use to be an "active reader".  We talked about the importance of stopping while reading to think about what you have read, not just reading the words without understanding.  We practiced making a picture in our head and playing the guessing game (predicting) to help keep us in the book and being an active reader.

We also did some partner reading.  In second grade we really focus on getting the students to have a discussion about their reading.  These beginning days we worked on the partner reading routines (how to sit, voice level, staying focused).  While reading independently we asked ourselves, "What is happening here?", and "What is this teaching me?".  We wrote these ideas on post it notes to share with our partner.

Here are some pictures from one of our partner reading sessions.
