We have started our unit on telling time and shapes. We spent the last two days reviewing how to tell time to the hour and half hour. We also talked about the differences between an analog and digital clock. I remember that last year when my daughter was in first grade, we tried to find an analog clock in our house and realized that we only had digital. A quick and inexpensive trip to Target fixed that and was very helpful when we practiced at home. Don't worry if you don't want to buy a new clock, we will be making clocks in class to take home to practice with.
Here are some things to focus on when practicing at home:
- Use the names of the hands - hour and minute, not short and long
- Make sure that your child isn't confusing the two hands (using hour hand instead of minute hand to make a time)
- When you show a time to the half hour (6:30) make sure that the hour hand is half way between the 6 and 7.
Here is a link to a website that has math games. There is a telling time game to try out.
