We have been working real hard on solving word problems in math. Our latest type of word problem is the comparing type. We have been focusing on the two types of comparing word problems called "greater unknown" and "lesser unknown". These can be a bit tricky because of the wording. The kids see the word
more and they think that they should use addition to solve these problems. Instead of looking for key words, we are asking ourselves, "what is happening" in this word problem. Drawing a diagram helps to figure out how to solve the problem.
example: Grace has 13 pencils. She has 4 more than Jake. How many pencils does Jake have?
We have been working on noticing that a problem like this is a compare problem and that we need to find the difference.
Here are some pictures of some of the kids working on their math facts at the end of math today.
